| The band was named Pink Floyd in honor of blues' musicians Pinkney 'Pink' Anderson and Floyd Council. Singer-guitarist Syd Barrett provided Pink Floyd with most of its original early material. Barrett’s elfin, tuneful psychedelia made him the Lewis Carroll of the pop scene. Intense experimentation with LSD unfortunately transported Barrett from enlightenment to mental instability, and increasingly unpredictable behavior necessitated his departure from Pink Floyd in 1968. After Syd Barrett's departure, the band became Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Richard Wright & Nick Mason. Waters took over most of the writing and lead vocals and Gilmour was an excellent guitarist. The band drew 100,000 fans for a free concert they did in London in '69 . Then in 1973 they released their masterpiece, Dark Side Of The Moon. The album would turn out to be one of music's best selling albums, staying on the Billboard charts for more than a decade, selling over 25 million copies. Although Floyd had been a big hit in England for years before Dark Side Of The Moon, it was this album that now made them superstars in the US and the rest of the rock world. |
