In Loving Memory
Howard Duane Allman
(11/20/46 - 10/29/71)
Duane Allman
Allman was one of the greatest
rock guitarists & master of the slide
guitar.  A founding member of The
Allman Brothers Band, he also had
a major role on the album Layla
and Other Assorted Love Songs, by
Derek and the Dominos.
His nickname was "Skydog"
Formed in 1968, in Macon, Ga., the Allman Brothers are one of those rare bands that not only
created but--to this day--continue to define an entire genre. Based around the fluid, inspired
guitar work of Duane Allman (who on 1/29/71 died from a motorcycle accident at the age of 24)
and the soulful Southern drawl of his brother Gregg, the six-member group blended elements of
soul, blues, rock, country--and even bits of jazz--fashioning a unique style marked by twin guitar
leads and long, meandering improvisations. The Allman Brothers were the flagship band and laid
the groundwork for a generation of Southern Rock artists. The Allman Brothers were also one of
the first groups (along with the Grateful Dead) to feature two drummers.
